Leonard Sharrow, one of the world's best-known bassoonists, was a native of New York City and a graduate of The Juilliard School of Music. He had been principal bassoon of the National Symphony Orchestra, Buffalo Philharmonic, Detroit Symphony, NBC Symphony (under Arturo Toscanini) and the Chicago Symphony (under Rafael Kubelik, Fritz Reiner and Jean Martinon). Before his death in 2004 at age 89, he coached young bassoonists and gave master classes across the US.
Joseph William Polisi was President of The Juilliard School of Music, a position he held since 1984 until his recent retirement. Polisi performed extensively in the US as bassoon soloist and chamber musician, in addition to performing with faculty and students in concerts at The Juilliard School. He has written many scholarly and educational articles for professional journals, is a frequent speaker on arts and education issues, and has produced several recordings. His two books, The Artist as Citizen and American Muse: The Life and Times of William Schuman were published by Amadeus Press.
"This CD could hardly be fuller of music rich in contrasts. Sharrow proves himself a master of his instrument." Music Web (Rob Barnett, 2013) "to my ear, Polisi is every bit Sharrow's equal in terms of technical prowess and beauty of tone." Fanfare (Jerry Dubins, 2013)
