Carolyn Hove, solo English horn with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra since 1988, is one of America's leading English horn virtuosos. She is a member of a small group of English horn players

(including Julie Ann Giacobassi, Patrick McFarland and Thomas Stacy) who have been actively trying, through concert appearances, commissions for new works, and recordings, to establish the English horn as a major solo instrument. During the period following her graduation form the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music in 1980, until she assumed the solo English horn position with the San Antonio Symphony in 1986, Hove had an active musical career in the Chicago area, where she was on the faculties of Elmhurst College and Northern Illinois University. It was at this time that she developed her enduring interest in new music as the result of her association with the Contemporary Chamber Players of the University of Chicago under the direction of composer/conductor Ralph Shapey.
