Featuring members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra and the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, the Venetian canzona represents the most highly developed genre of purely instrumental music whose vocal beginnings are yet fully evident. When, in 1608, the Venetian publisher Alessandro Rauerij issued a collection of 36 canzone for instrumental ensembles of four, five and eight players, the canzona as a genre was at the height of its development. Rauerij's collection presents a cross-section of about thirty years of Italian canzona composition; and there would be more publications of collections of canzone over the next decade.
